| A disappointing result in a game we thought we had a good chance of winning. The evening started ominously when Richard took a wrong turning and nearly drove us to derby by mistake!! (Prematch Nerves?) Geoff from the A team was joined by Richard, Dave, Roy and myself from the B team, things began to look grim when first Geoff and then Dave lost their games. Richard showing is chess was better than his navigational skills pulled back a point but the contest was over when Roy lost on board three, the possible draw that I looked at one stage to be achieving did not materialize so a disappointing finish to a game saw us miss out on another cup final. |

| Being without two first team regulars and out graded by approximately 40 points per board, we went into this game hoping that…….er……..our opponents wouldn’t turn up. However they did. |
| Despite the pre match pep talk/drink in the pub before hand our bottom three boards, Jim Roy and I succumbed to the inevitable fairly quickly and when Neil on board one and Geoff on four capitulated the match was effectively over, the three remaining players battled bravely on, unfortunately Stuart on board three lost on time while in a good position and both Andy and John on two and five respectively took their matches to the wire before losing in the endgame. So in the end we were unable to prevent the predicted white wash, but at least it was good experience against a side that regularly play their chess in the first division. By Peter Tideswell. |
